Joaquin Rodrigo composed in 1939 his “Concierto de Aranjuez,” which celebrated the guitar, and most importantly, the music of Spain. My intention from the inception of this “Concierto de Miami” has been to compose music that would offer a much needed voice to the burgeoning artistic culture that is emanating from the vast melting pot that is South Florida – with its upbeat and colorful Hispanic influence – and accessibly present it to a broader classical audience. What better medium to convey this than the iconic trumpet playing of Arturo Sandoval, and Eduardo Marturet’s Miami Symphony Orchestra.
The Concierto is in one movement, with three sections, (Fast, Slow, Fast), and has an unconscious fusion of elements from most of this continent’s popular music. Over the course of the commission, I have been listening heavily to the music of Rufus Wainwright, Aaron Copland, Ennio Morriconne, Randy Newman, Radiohead, Ottorino Resphigi, Astor Piazzolla, Maurice Ravel, and Afro Peruvian artists such as Eva Ayllon, and am sure one can find echoes and traces of their influence in this piece.
